Under the supervision and with the participation of Jenin Directorate of Agriculture, Oxfam and the Palestinian Development Center conducted a field session as part of the Farmers' Field School in the town of Burqin, entitled "Supplemental Irrigation in Olive Trees." This session was part of the "Promoting Green Gold for the Palestinian Economy" project, funded by the Danida Green Business Partnership (DGBP) program of the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Eleven olive farmers participated in the session, along with technical staff from Jenin Directorate of Agriculture. The session addressed the importance of supplemental irrigation as a key climate-smart agricultural practice and its role in mitigating the effects of climate change and water scarcity. This contributes to improving olive tree growth, increasing productivity, and preserving the quality of the fruit and olive oil.
Participants also discussed best practices during the olive harvest season, factors affecting the efficiency of olive presses, and ways to enhance the marketing of Palestinian olive oil and increase its competitiveness in local and international markets. This will positively impact farmers' incomes and enhance the added value of the national product.
This activity comes within the framework of ongoing cooperation between the Ministry of Agriculture, represented by Jenin Agriculture Directorate, the Palestinian Center for Economic and Social Development (ESDC), and Oxfam, with the aim of enhancing the sustainability of the olive value chain, raising the efficiency of farmers, and encouraging the adoption of climate-smart agricultural practices, which contributes to improving production, raising the quality of Palestinian olive oil, and enhancing the resilience of the agricultural sector in the face of environmental and economic challenges.
