The Ministry of Agriculture raises issues concerning the Palestinian olive sector at the Arab and international levels during the meeting of the Arab Olive Bureau.

The Ministry of Agriculture participated today, Thursday, in the periodic meeting of the Arab Olive Bureau's focal points, represented by Engineer Hussam Melhem, Palestine's representative to the Arab Olive Bureau and the International Olive Council. This participation comes within the framework of strengthening joint Arab cooperation and developing the olive sector at both the regional and international levels.

The meeting follows a series of technical meetings held by the specialized committees and working groups of the Arab Olive Bureau, with the participation of approximately 20 experts from Palestine. This initiative aims to enhance governance in the olive sector and develop mechanisms for joint action by engaging specialized expertise and experience. The committees' work covered areas such as marketing and promotion, scientific research, quality and standards, in addition to the participation of representatives from the private sector.

Participants discussed the outcomes of these meetings and the resulting technical and strategic recommendations related to improving quality and standards, developing research and production technologies, and enhancing marketing. This is all part of the Arab Olive Bureau's efforts to develop joint work and advance the Arab olive sector. The meeting also discussed mechanisms for organizing the work of the electronic working groups for 2026, including preparing a schedule of regular meetings, developing communication and follow-up tools, and enhancing the exchange of information and technical expertise among member states. This aims to improve coordination efficiency and ensure the sustainability of joint technical work.

At the international level, the participants reviewed the outcomes of the meetings held by the Director-General of the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development in Brussels, aimed at strengthening international partnerships. They also discussed several issues on the international agenda, including the reinstatement of Syria's membership in the organization and the potential expiration of the International Agreement on Olive Oil and Table Olives at the end of 2026. The meeting addressed several issues related to Palestine, most notably the banking restrictions hindering the transfer of its financial contributions to the International Olive Council. The Ministry of Agriculture continues its efforts, in coordination with Arab partners, to find practical solutions that guarantee Palestine's continued participation and commitment in international forums.

The meeting concluded with preparations for the General Assembly of the International Olive Council, scheduled to be held on June 30 in Portugal.
