Tulkarem: September 27, 2026

Tulkarem Directorate of Agriculture and the International Christian Association took final delivery of a 50-kilowatt, grid-connected solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant in Ellar area. This initiative is part of the UMCOR project for grid-connected solar PV systems for groundwater wells in the northern West Bank governorates, implemented through a partnership between the Ministry of Agriculture and the Near East Council of Churches/International Christian Association.
The project aims to enhance farmers' resilience to the impacts of climate change by expanding the use of solar energy as a sustainable power source in the agricultural sector. This contributes to lowering irrigation system operating costs and reducing the expense of extracting water for agriculture—benefits that are passed on to farmers through reduced irrigation water prices.
The 50-kilowatt solar plant provides a sustainable energy source to operate the irrigation system and reduces reliance on conventional energy sources. This enhances resource efficiency, alleviates operational burdens on farmers, and supports the sustainability of agricultural production amidst economic and climatic challenges.
Valued at approximately 150,000 NIS, the project aligns with the Ministry of Agriculture’s efforts to promote the transition to renewable energy in the agricultural sector, cut production costs, and improve water and energy efficiency. These measures strengthen farmers' ability to maintain production and ensure the long-term sustainability of agricultural resources. The Ministry of Agriculture emphasizes the importance of partnerships with international and local institutions in implementing renewable energy and agricultural infrastructure projects, given their impact on reducing production costs and enhancing resource-use efficiency. It underscores its continued commitment to supporting projects that bolster farmers' resilience, achieve water and food security, and develop an agricultural sector that is more sustainable and capable of withstanding climate change.
