Dura Agriculture Directorate, in cooperation with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the General Administration of Extension and Rural Development (Ruminant Department), began implementing the extension activities of the “My Initiative” project in the Al-Sarra community, south of the city of Dura, by holding an expanded meeting targeting the sheep breeders participating in the project, with the participation of about 40 male and female farmers.
During implementation, the Director of the Ruminants Department at the Ministry of Agriculture, Dr. Faisal Rashaida, and the Head of the Ruminants Department in the Dora Agriculture Directorate, Engineer Ahmed Tabisha, gave a practical explanation of the project plan’s axes and the mechanisms for implementing them in the field, which was prepared based on a technical study carried out by the United Nations Development Programme, and focuses on developing herd management and improving the productive performance of livestock breeders.
The Directorate of Agriculture emphasizes the start of implementing the national numbering system for sheep for all beneficiaries, in implementation of the decision of the Minister of Agriculture, Professor Rizq Salimiya, considering numbering an essential tool in the health and technical management of the herd, and a main condition for eligibility for any future interventions or assistance.
The Directorate also implemented guidance sessions that focused on modernizing technical practices in the management of young newborns, with the aim of reducing mortality rates and raising production efficiency, in addition to announcing the start of implementing an integrated training program (theoretical and practical) aimed at enabling farmers to apply modern breeding techniques, and enhancing their skills in using farm records and genetic improvement methods.
In the context of field follow-up, the technical teams opened the door to discussion with farmers to monitor the most prominent challenges facing the livestock sector in the region, where the interventions focused on the need to provide basic veterinary vaccinations at reasonable prices, and to tighten technical control over feed factories to ensure the quality of feed mixtures, in addition to strengthening biosecurity procedures and controlling the movement of importing animals to limit the spread of epidemic diseases.
The activities concluded with the implementation of field visits to four farms in the region, during which the extent to which the proposed interventions were compatible with the actual needs on the ground was evaluated, as the farmers expressed their confidence in the feasibility of these interventions and their role in supporting the sustainability of the livestock sector in light of the current economic conditions.
The “My Initiative - Empowering Marginalized Communities through Investment in Agribusiness Development” project is implemented in joint coordination between the Ministry of Agriculture and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), with support from the countries of India, Brazil and South Africa through the IBSA Fund, and aims to strengthen institutional and technical capabilities and achieve sustainable development in the Palestinian countryside.
