Ministry of Agriculture: The Higher Agricultural Emergency Committee in the southern governorates discuss with FAO, and the food security sector the reality of the agricultural sector in the Gaza Strip

The Higher Agricultural Emergency Committee in the southern governorates held a coordination meeting with Mr. Shiro, representative of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), and Mr. Jean-Louis, Food Security Sector Coordinator for Palestine, at the FAO office in Deir al-Balah. Several relevant technical staff members were also present.

The meeting addressed the current situation of the agricultural sector in the Gaza Strip under the prevailing difficult circumstances. It reviewed the extent of the damage inflicted on the plant, animal, and fish production sectors, and the challenges facing farmers, fishermen, and livestock breeders. The meeting also discussed priorities for urgent intervention to enhance food security and support the resilience of those working in the agricultural sector.

The Emergency Committee in the southern governorates emphasized the importance of continued joint coordination between the Ministry of Agriculture, international partners, and institutions working in the agricultural sector. This coordination aims to ensure integrated efforts and a more effective response to the needs of farmers and fishermen throughout the Gaza Strip. The Committee also expressed its appreciation for the efforts of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) through its ongoing projects and interventions in the areas of plant, animal, and fish production. These efforts contribute to supporting farmers and fishermen, enhancing the continuity of production processes, and mitigating the impact of the crisis on food security in the Gaza Strip.

The participants stressed the need to expand the scope of emergency agricultural interventions in the coming phase, in order to protect the agricultural sector and maintain the ability of those working in it to produce and continue their work, especially in light of the escalating humanitarian and economic challenges in the Gaza Strip.
